When investing in premium windsurfing gear, achieving the perfect rig setup is critical for performance and durability. A common question among windsurfers is whether they can mix and match masts and sails across different brands.Here is our expert compatibility guide to help you choose the right mast profile (RDM vs. SDM) and understand critical bend curves.

1. Chinook: The Aftermarket Constant Curve Standard

• Recommended Mast Profile: RDM for bombproof durability or SDM for budget-friendly performance.
• The Rule: Chinook masts are legendary aftermarket options engineered with a classic, true Constant Curve bend matrix (63% base / 77% top). They are specifically designed to act as a universal fit for the majority of sail brands on the market.
• Compatibility Note: Chinook masts offer incredible versatility. They cross-rig flawlessly with Ezzy Sails and Duotone, and work very well with North Sails and Goya. However, because they are strict constant curve masts, they are not recommended for high-performance NeilPryde racing lines that require an extreme flex-top response.

2. Duotone: The Universal Medium Constant Curve

• Recommended Mast Profile: RDM for wave and freeride; SDM for cambered race and foil sails.
• The Rule: Duotone engineering relies on a specific Medium Constant Curve bend profile. Their masts are engineered with precisely balanced deflection metrics (61-63% at the bottom, 75-77% at the top).
• Compatibility Note: Because Duotone's bend curve sits perfectly in the middle of the global industry standard, their masts offer excellent cross-brand compatibility. They work remarkably well (up to 80-90% efficiency) with brands like Ezzy and modern Severne RDM setups. However, avoid pairing a Duotone SDM mast with a strict Flex Top NeilPryde racing sail.

3. Ezzy Sails: The RDM Specialists

• Recommended Mast Profile: RDM (Reduced Diameter Mast) is highly recommended.
• The Rule: Ezzy Sails are designed, shaped, and tested exclusively around RDM masts. While some larger freeride sizes can technically accept an SDM, an RDM mast is essential to unlock the sail's signature progressive twist, lightweight handling, and bulletproof durability.
• Expert Tip: To get 100% performance out of an Ezzy sail, pair it with an Ezzy Hookipa or Ezzy Legacy mast. Ezzy masts feature a unique constant-curve profile that matches their sails perfectly across all generations.

4. Neil Pryde: The Flex Top Tradition

• Recommended Mast Profile: RDM or SDM depending on the specific model program (Wave vs. Racing).
• The Rule: Historically, NeilPryde sails are famous for their proprietary Flex Top bend curve. This means the top of the mast bends significantly more than the bottom section compared to other brands.
• Compatibility Note: Do not rig a NeilPryde sail on a Severne, Patrik, or Ezzy mast (and vice versa). If you use a rigid-top mast on a NeilPryde sail, the leech will not open properly, the sail will feel incredibly heavy, and you will lose all control at the top end. Always look for a dedicated NeilPryde mast or a 100% compatible Flex Top aftermarket option.

5. North Sails: Advanced Variable Pitch & Constant Curve

• Recommended Mast Profile: RDM for wave/3DI molding setups; MDM/SDM for high-performance and race foils.
• The Rule: The new era of North Sails premium masts uses cutting-edge Tow Preg carbon technology with a Variable Pitch construction matrix. While categorized broadly under the Constant Curve family, their bend profile is ultra-progressive.
• Compatibility Note: North masts feature an Integrated Ferrule 2.0 that softens the bend right at the joint, ensuring a completely seamless twist profile on modern 3DI sails. They are highly optimized for North's own structural sail line but interface cleanly with other high-end Constant Curve sails (like Ezzy or newer Severne models). Avoid using older, stiff-top masts on a modern North rig.

7. Severne Sails: Constant Curve & Hard Top Profiles

• Recommended Mast Profile: RDM for wave/freemove; SDM for race/slalom/foil.
• The Rule: Modern Severne sails are built around a Constant Curve / slightly Hard Top bend curve definition. They require a mast that stays stiffer in the top section to maintain the structural integrity of the sail profile under high wind loads.
• Compatibility Note: Severne sails work best with Severne Apex or Gorilla masts. Avoid rigging a Severne sail on a very soft-top mast, as the draft will pull back, ruining the sail’s balance and wind range.
