How Warm Should Your Wetsuit Be?

The most important function of a wetsuit is to keep you warm in the water. The temperature of the water will determine what thickness wetsuit you will need. Wetsuits are measured in millimetres with a combination of 2-3 numbers that look like this 3/2mm. The first number refers to the thickness of the wetsuit in the chest, back, and core area. The second number refers to the thickness of the wetsuit in the arms, shoulders, and legs. Here’s a general breakdown of the conditions each thickness can handle:

Full Wetsuit

Full wetsuits are the most versatile option, and the best wetsuit for cold water. Perfect for year-round watersports, full wetsuits are available in a variety of thicknesses to accommodate varying water temperatures. With a full wetsuit, you can keep your body warm even when the water is chilly.

Full wetsuits are available in many different designs and styles, including zip-up wetsuits, hooded & non-hood wetsuits, and full wetsuits with integrated hoods.

Short Wetsuit

A short wetsuit is ideal for warm water or summer watersports. These wetsuits can be worn for most watersports including surfing, paddleboarding, kitesurfing, wakeboarding, kiteboarding, and scuba diving. While short wetsuits offer less coverage and are designed to be worn in warmer water, they still offer excellent flexibility, protection, and comfort.

However, it’s important to note that wetsuit thickness can vary depending on the individual. Some people may feel comfortable in a 3/2mm wetsuit in 65-degree water, while others may opt for a 4/3mm wetsuit in similar conditions.
